Chemins de la Liberté – The Path to Freedom: Grange Vauneyre

Embed this item to access it offline
This walk runs alongside the Memorial to the Resistance before leading to the site of one of the Vercors Resistance camps, Camp No. 6, which was set up by Benjamin Malossane in February 1943. The members of the Maquis survived for several months in the Grange de Vauneyre, which was tucked away in a quiet clearing hidden from view by the forest. Here you will be plunged into the day-to-day lives of these men and women who decided to join the underground movement.
After taking in the expansive views of the Grand Veymont and the surrounding peaks, you’ll wander through the hushed, mysterious atmosphere of Lente forest.

  • The National Memorial of the Resistance in Vercors

The National Memorial of the Resistance in Vercors is managed by the Park of Vercors, it allows to better understand the movement of the resistance and the maquis of the Vercors in particular. Integrated into the national network Mémora, its mission, in the face of the inevitable disappearance of the witnesses of this era, to perpetuate the memory of the maquis, the fighting but also the martyr villages of the last world war. A film projected in the last room of the museum, opens up the significance of the acts of resistance by more recent examples throughout the world. The memorial is built near the Camp6 of the maquis of Vercors.
  • Camp C6

Camp C6 was originally set up by Benjamin Malossane and Michel Weber from the Combat movement before coming under the authority of the Franc-Tireur Resistance organisation. It was located first in Laragnole, in the municipality of Rochechinard, and subsequently on the Montagne de Musan and Col de la Chau. The Grange Vauneyre in this clearing reflects the atmosphere of the camp to this day. It was close by, at Col de la Chau, that the Memorial to the Resistance was erected in 1994 in memory of the Vercors Maquis.

Description

  1. Setting out from the car park at Col de la Chau, head up the steps that lead to the Mémorial de la Résistance, getting the most out of the trail about the Memorial’s architecture. Now leave the Memorial footbridge on your right and carry on for a couple of minutes before taking the path that rises to the left, signposted by three steps.
  2. Cross the D76 (be careful: it’s a busy road) to the information panel on the other side and head in the direction of Grange de Vauneyre. A forest path climbs abruptly until you get to the Grange de Vauneyre meadow, which is where the men from Camp No. 6 were stationed.
  3. Take the forest path that goes to the left and walk along it for around 800 m until you arrive in front of a wide forest track.
  4. Turn left to go down the track via the GR95 that leads to the D76 in the direction of Col de La Chau. Staying on the same track, walk for a few meters along the secondary (départementale) road and head back to the car park where you started from.
