This stunning hike over the Ambel plateau invites you to reflect on the history of the Resistance in the Vercors.

If you are quiet and keep your eyes open during this walk, there may be some delightful surprises in store for you: deer, chamois, foxes, trees you won’t find anywhere else, gentians and orchids... an incredible array of natural wonders is waiting to be discovered!
With its vast meadows, forests and clearings, the plateau of Ambel is steeped in the history of the Resistance in the Vercors. Nowadays it is an immense summer pasture listed as a nature conservation area and owned by the department of the Drôme, where the wide, open spaces are all yours.

The flora and fauna are particularly rich between the northern and southern Prealps.

    The plateau d'Ambel

The Plateau d'Ambel is a "sensitive natural space" where flowers are forbidden. At the heart of a limestone fold of the Vercors, the Plateau d'Ambel consists of vast lawns and a mosaic of clearings and forests. Between the pre-Alps of the north and the south, the fauna and the flora are particularly rich. The summer of the cows and horses are in the summer.

Description

From Font d'Urle, head towards Pas de l'Infernet (1) and Pas de la Ferrière (2) before crossing the beautiful pastures of Ambel plateau via Tubanet summer pasture to reach Tête de la Dame (4) at a height of 1,506 meters. Navigating is straightforward in clear weather, but thick fog can complicate orientation due to the many trails left by roaming herds. Leaving on your right the rock of Toulau that watches over the Ambel plateau, the route descends once more to the village of Omblèze, which is made up of several hamlets, including Les Arbods.
  • Departure : Font d'Urle (car park)
  • Arrival : Les Arbods (municipality of Omblèze)
  • Towns crossed : Bouvante, Omblèze, and Saint-Julien-en-Quint

Recommandations

Be careful, as you are momentarily in mountain pasture areas, you may come across herd protection dogs, often Patous.
Make sure you always go around the herds, remaining calm while the guard dog identifies you, and don't pet or threaten them!

Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the Font d'Urle plateau (a nature conservation area) from June 1 to October 30.

Use the passageways to cross the fences, close the gates and barriers.

Stay on the marked paths is also respect private property.
Herd protection dogs
In the mountain pastures, the guard dogs are there to protect the herds from predators. When I hike, I adapt my behaviour by going around the herd and pausing so that the dog can identify me. Click here to see the video : c'est quoi au juste un chien de protection ?
