Just two of the important details you should know about this section:

Le Pas de la Clé (Clé pass) : in days gone by, the timber from the communes of Autrans and Méaudre was transported to Pas de la Clé. Here the wood was sent down a purpose-built chute, sliding all the way down to Montaud and Veurey. The trunks were tied together to form log rafts on the river Isère before being guided downstream towards Beaucaire and the coast.

Molière plateau : (meaning either “wet” or “millstone”) is a traditional grazing area for heifers. It is home to a great diversity of plant (such as orchids) and animal species (including marmot, chamois, roe deer and black grouse). The Isère Departmental Council has designated Molière mountain pasture a nature conservation area (ENS). From this plateau, the view opens onto the valley of Autrans, Grenoble, a good part of the Alps and the foothills of the Massif Central.
This section is made up of a sequence of small switchbacks and occasionally challenging stretches between rocks and small limestone outcrops. The route is also dotted with a number of outstanding viewpoints all along the edge of the ridges.

  • Refuge de Gève
Refuge de Gève - Inspiration Vercors

    Gève Refuge – Camp 3

Now known as the Refuge de Gève, this forest cabin once served as the winter quarters for the Camp 3 Resistance fighters. It was set up by the Franc-Tireur Resistance movement in the spring of 1943. It housed around 30 people who were refusing to undertake the Service du Travail Obligatoire – the forced enlistment of French citizens. Their days were devoted to collecting firewood and keeping watch. They later took part in the fighting in the Vercors and the Liberation of Lyon in 1944. Since Camp 3 was too easy for the enemy to reach in the summer, it moved to the Cabane des Carteaux.
  • Belvédère de la Molière

    Viewpoint of the Molière

The viewpoint of the Molière offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Vercors. A large part of the Alps is offered to you as far as Mont Blanc, passing by the Chartreuse, Belledonne or Oisans.

Description

The route climbs the ridges of the far north of the Vercors, passing through Vira Gros Jean (1) and Pas de la Clé (2). As far as La Buffe (3) and La Sure (4), the succession of small switchbacks and sometimes challenging stretches between rocks and small limestone outcrops can be difficult in places. There are a number of outstanding viewpoints waiting to be discovered along the entire ridge line as far as Molière: the valley of the Isère and the massifs of Chartreuse, Belledonne and Oisans.
  • Departure : Gève refuge (hut)

You are crossing a conservation nature area with specific regulations to be respected (information panel at the entrance to the site).
Herd protection dogs
In the mountain pastures, the guard dogs are there to protect the herds from predators. When I hike, I adapt my behaviour by going around the herd and pausing so that the dog can identify me. Click here to see the video : c'est quoi au juste un chien de protection ?
