The Grand Tour du Vercors starts in the heart of the Vercors at the village of La Chapelle-en-Vercors before heading towards Vassieux-en-Vercors via Saint-Agnan-en-Vercors.
You set out deep in the Vercors amidst the villages, meadows and forests of the Central Vercors. This wonderful stage starts off along a track, followed by a second section that is a delight to ride along as far as the village of Vassieux-en-Vercors. There are lovely views of the southern part of the Vercors.

3 points of interest

  • La cour des fusillés et son mémorial

The courtyard of the farm Albert

Back in the village, next to the post office, the ruins of the farm Albert are also called "Cour des fusillés". On 25 July 1945, while the non-escaped inhabitants were held hostage in the school and the Wafen SS troops burned down the village, 16 young men and the schoolmaster were shot this location. To the right of the remains of the surrounding wall, a small memorial recalls these events.

    The castle Foirevielle

A small detour through the ruins (very discreet) of the castle of Foirevielle offers a beautiful view on La Chapelle-en-Vercors and the surrounding valleys. In the ninth century, this caste motte watched the roads coming from Vassieux or the col de Rousset. The village of Bâtie de l'Orme and then of the Bâtie de Vercors huddled at his feet. It was in the twelfth century that the villagers moved the village to the present location.
  • Nécropole

    Vassieux-en-Vercors Necropolis

After the village of Vassieux, you can discover the Necropolis, where all the civilian and military victims of the events in Vassieux lie buried. In addition to the people of the village, the graves show us that the Resistance in the Vercors was a huge civil and military movement that brought together men and women of many different nationalities. On the stone slabs can be read the names of Russian, Polish, Algerian, English and American soldiers and members of the Maquis. The shells of two of the gliders the German soldiers landed are on display beyond the graveyard. The Memorial to the Resistance, which is managed by the Vercors Park and the departmental Resistance Museum, help you learn more about the Vercors Maquis.

Description

  1. The Grand Tour du Vercors begins in Central Vercors in the heart of the village of Chapelle-en-Vercors. The itinerary leaves the village on a gentle trail, starting with the short descent through the Freydière valley on a beautiful trail that takes you to the hamlet of Chabotte in the municipality of Saint-Agnan-en-Vercors.
  2. Surrounded by a wild Vercors, the trail climbs up the Vernaison valley amidst meadows and a small clearing along the edge of the forest—with views of Col du Rousset in the background—before making its way to the village of Saint-Agnan-en-Vercors.
  3. After crossing the charming village of Saint-Agnan-en-Vercors, the serious stuff begins with a great climb first on the road and then along a very pretty path to Le Fouletier.
  4. The route continues through the middle of the forest along a lovely little path that is great fun and that takes you through Combe Libouse surrounded by box and beech trees.
  5. Near the hamlet of La Mure, the path passes next to the old windmill with wonderful views over the Vassieux plain. The stage ends on a tranquil note, crossing the plain as far as the village of Vassieux-en-Vercors, once a stronghold of the Resistance.

Recommandations

When you come across people on foot or horse, slow down, move to one side, and do not make any sudden movements.

In the mountains:
Use the installed passages to cross fences, close gates and barriers.
Stay on the marked trails and respect private property.
The trails can be slippery in rainy conditions!
Do not cross hay meadows or cultivated fields.

Ensure that the fauna is not scared by your presence.

Respect sheep farms, refuges and cabin shelters.

Collect your waste, think nature.
You are in summer pastures, and may meet herd protection and guard dogs (patous). Always ensure that you go a long way round the animals, calmly so that the dog can identify you, do not pat or threaten them.

Important: from between around November 15 to April 15, the mountain biking GTV is totally impassable due to snow and ice!
