This flat stage is largely straightforward. A few small uphill sections amidst the walnut trees will take you across the villages of Saint-Laurent-en-Royans, Saint-Eulalie-en-Royans, Pont-en-Royans and Saint-André-en-Royans as you finish up in the small village of Saint-Romans before heading gently towards the edge of the Marandan outdoor activities centre.
From one village to the next, surrounded by walnut plantations, this is a gentle segment in terms of the amount of climbing, meaning you can rest a little and make the most of, and visit, the beautiful villages of the Royans.

3 points of interest

  • PNRV

    Waterfall of Frochet

The Frochet waterfall has the characteristic of being a cascade of tuff, also called travertine. Here the environment is fresh and shaded, which is favorable to the development of mosses. Under the action of water, the mosses petrify, and this forms the tuff, which is a calcareous rock.
  • Le pont des Chartreux et le Cholet
Le pont des Chartreux et le Cholet - S. Bossand

    The Chartreux Bridge

The Chartreux bridge is built of tufa stone, very present in the area. It allows to cross the Cholet, and has long facilitated exchanges between Saint-Laurent-en-Royans and Saint-Jean-en-Royans. It was also a place of passage for the transport of coal from the Col de la Machine.
  • Pont-en-Royans
    Pont-en-Royans - S.M Booth

    View of Pont-en-Royans

It is one of the most famous villages of Dauphiné, thanks to its houses hanging above the Bourne. In this narrow site, surrounded by mountains, one had to gain space. Many houses, built in advance on the rock, are actually suspended in the void, with wooden supports. It was very practical at the time to fish and get water. Today, a water museum is set up in the heart of the village.
