Die - m_rocheblave Die
The capital of the Diois, on the banks of the river Drôme, is dominated by the Glandasse. The old center is surrounded by a rampart of the 3rd century and conceals architectural treasures: Gallo-Roman ramparts, door Saint-Marcel, Romanesque mosaic. The immense Notre-Dame Cathedral is the witness of the prestigious past of the city. On the sunny hillsides, vineyards and limestone can be heard wonderfully to give the famous Clairette de Die.Porte St Marcel - S.M Booth The Saint-Marcel Gate
The Saint-Marcel gate is a fortified gate built in the 3rd century with the ramparts of Die. It was the main gateway into the city. Since 1862, it is classified as a historical monument.
Description
The Grand Tour leaves the pretty town of Die and heads back towards the Vercors. It then passes close to the two delightful villages of Chamaloc and Marignac-en-Diois, which are well worth a detour (particularly via the crossroads of Gros Chêne (1), Baise car park (2) and La Roche (3)).
The path is straightforward and quite clear with captivating views of the cliffs of Glandasse and the foothills of the Vercors. The route then goes back up via Col de Ponet and Marignac pass (5) before descending again to the picturesque village of Ponet-et-Saint-Auban (6). At the pass, a beautiful view of the southern mountain ledges of the Vercors awaits you. After the village of Ponet, you climb back up on the Ramiat crest via Combe Mare (7) to the village of Sainte-Croix with enchanting views of the valley and the Drôme river.
You can easily divide this stage into two by stopping off at Marignac-en-Diois or Ponet-et-Saint-Auban.
For a change of pace—and possibly to cool off—why not take a pleasant trip down the Drôme in a canoe?
